Wire fraud is a growing risk in real estate transactions. Cybercriminals may attempt to intercept emails and send fraudulent wiring instructions in order to redirect funds.

Important Reminder

Wiring instructions should always be independently verified before sending any funds.

Do not rely solely on emailed instructions. Email accounts can be compromised, and fraudulent messages can appear legitimate.

Safety Recommendations

Before sending a wire transfer:

  • Call the title company or escrow officer using a verified phone number.

  • Confirm wiring instructions verbally.

  • Double-check account and routing numbers.

  • Be cautious of last-minute changes to instructions.

If anything seems unusual, pause the transaction and verify details by phone.

If You Suspect Fraud

If you believe you may have received fraudulent wiring instructions or sent funds in error:

  • Immediately contact your bank.

  • Notify the title company.

  • Report the incident to the appropriate authorities.
